Presented for initial biomechanics assessment at six months post-surgery following an Achilles tendon rupture, this initial assessment took place in November 2020.  The injury was sustained during a competitive football match and was unprovoked.  Essentially the athlete heard and felt an audible ‘pop’.

‍

The athlete was being phased back into full training at the time of biomechanics assessment.  The Achilles tendon was clearly thickened compared to the contralateral, there was bilateral eversion noted and a low gear foot posture. There was a leg length discrepancy with the left and symptomatic side being longer, there was functional restriction of the medial column and Hubscher score of 1/3 bilaterally, there was marginal to moderate osteophyte formation over the first MTP joint and ROM consistent with functional hallux limitus.

The injury history was relatively unremarkable from a mechanical perspective.  The importance of correlating these findings to the functional foot scores and forefoot outcome measures is crucial when determining if recommended intervention should take place by way of orthotics.  Given the initial onset of injury, which was unprovoked, it is feasible that an orthotic device could help reduce the evident ‘bowing’ from the tendon and aid the healing process.  This was the initial thought process.

More About Chris: He has over 25 years of experience in sport and clinical sciences. Chris is a licensed chiropractor, certified strength and conditioning specialist and former certified athletic trainer (15 years). He earned his Doctor of Chiropractic, PhD (abd) in Exercise Science, a Master of Science in Exercise Science, and a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management and Health Fitness.
He is also in private practice and consults as a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist and performance coordinator for individuals and athletic teams, and a guest lecturer/researcher at colleges and universities throughout the world.
